Episode 87: Why Does Being Well Take So Much Work?
Are you doing everything right for your health, yet still feel like you're barely keeping your head above water?
You prioritise sleep, watch what you eat, exercise, manage stress and perhaps even work on nervous system regulation. Meanwhile, other people seem to get away with doing far less — and still feel perfectly fine.
Why does simply staying well require so much effort from you?
In this episode of Simply Well and Beyond, I'm challenging the idea that we should all be able to function under the same conditions.
Our bodies are different. Genetics, hormonal changes, previous illnesses, chronic stress, environmental exposures and life experiences can all influence our individual capacity and resilience.
I also share my own experience with debilitating back pain. Fourteen years ago, I couldn't comfortably sit through a meal. Today, I'm pain-free — not because my back requires nothing from me, but because I've learned what it needs to function well.
In this episode, we explore:
-
Why maintaining your health may require more effort than it does for someone else.
-
How individual biology, chronic stress and nervous system regulation influence our capacity.
-
The potential role of environmental exposures, including mold, and why individual susceptibility matters.
-
Why physical symptoms and nervous system dysregulation aren't necessarily problems you can solve through mindset alone.
-
How menopause, sensory sensitivity and changing tolerance to light, noise or stimulation can affect everyday life.
-
Why respecting your current limitations doesn't mean accepting them as permanent.
-
How to stop comparing yourself with others and start building resilience on your own terms.
The most important message?
Stop using somebody else's tolerance as evidence of what your body should be able to tolerate.
Your current baseline is not necessarily your permanent ceiling.
You don't have to choose between pushing through and giving up. There is another way: understanding your body, supporting its needs and creating the conditions in which your capacity can grow.
Because the goal isn't to spend the rest of your life managing yourself. The goal is to make being well cost you less.
Ready to work with your body instead of fighting it?
